Five small habits worth changing
A better finish often begins with a gentler process.
1. Washing a hot panel
Heat can dry cleaning products before they can be rinsed away. Move into shade when possible and give the panels time to cool. Work in smaller sections when conditions require it.
2. Sharing tools between wheels and paint
Wheel grime should stay away from painted panels. Keep wheel brushes, wash mitts and drying towels separate, and clean them after use.
3. Scrubbing a stubborn spot
Pressure is not always the answer. Use a surface-appropriate product and allow the recommended dwell time. If the mark remains, reassess rather than applying increasingly aggressive force.
4. Using the same product everywhere
A wheel cleaner, interior cleaner and glass cleaner serve different purposes. Check the label and the surface before applying any product. Test an inconspicuous area if compatibility is uncertain.
5. Putting towels away damp or dirty
Contaminated towels can transfer grit back to a finish. Wash them appropriately, dry them fully and store them in a clean place. Retire heavily contaminated towels from paintwork duties.
These notes introduce general care principles. Follow the vehicle handbook and the instructions for the actual products and equipment you use.
