Under the bonnet: a careful cleaning approach
Cosmetic engine-bay care starts with restraint and a cool engine.
Begin with an assessment
An engine bay contains electrical connections, air intakes and materials that react differently to cleaning. Consult the handbook and assess any leaks or damaged components before beginning. Mechanical concerns should be addressed separately.
Keep water under control
Flooding an engine bay is not a substitute for careful cleaning. Use appropriate brushes and controlled moisture on accessible surfaces, while protecting sensitive areas as directed by the manufacturer.
Dry and inspect
Remove remaining moisture, check the accessible areas and avoid adding slippery or unsuitable dressings. Remove any temporary protective coverings before the vehicle is used.
Understand the limits
A clean engine bay can make visual inspection easier, but detailing does not fix faults or establish a vehicle’s mechanical condition. It should never be described as a guaranteed performance improvement.
These notes introduce general care principles. Follow the vehicle handbook and the instructions for the actual products and equipment you use.
